President’s Statement – Muireann Ryan, President

Reflecting on a Year of Impact
It is with immense pride and gratitude that I present this year’s annual report for the Galway Lions Club. The 2024–2025 fiscal year has been a resounding success, marked by significant growth in fundraising, strategic allocation of resources, and a deepened commitment to serving our community. Our club has not only surpassed its fundraising goals but also deepened its commitment to supporting those most in
need across Galway.

Despite societal economic challenges, our club has demonstrated resilience and generosity, raising a total of €109,289—a 9% increase over the previous year and 17% above our budgeted forecast. This achievement is a testament to the dedication of our members, volunteers, and supporters.

At the heart of the Galway Lions Club is a team of fully voluntary members—local individuals who invest their time, energy, and compassion into building a stronger, more inclusive community. These members receive no compensation for their work. Their reward lies in the difference they make helping families and individuals heat their homes, supporting mental health services, providing food security, and uplifting vulnerable groups through education, outreach, and care.

Flagship Fundraisers and Community Engagement
Among the standout events, the annual Radio Auction in conjunction with Galway Bay FM and the Donations campaign brought in nearly €60,000, reaffirming its place as the club’s cornerstone fundraiser. The Annual Cash collections by members at various locations across the city as part of the Christmas appeal, raised over
€15,000 and another highlight was the November Swim, which doubled its income over two years, raising €15,028 directly for Hopespace Counseling.

The Golf Classic and Concert Night in partnership with Trad On The Prom added both financial and social value, with the latter fostering strong community spirit and engagement.

Charitable Impact Across Galway
The club’s charitable initiatives reflect a broad and inclusive mission:

  • Winter Fuel Assistance: almost €4,000 allocated to help vulnerable
    households stay warm.
  • Mental Health Support: Over €15,000 raised directly for and invested in
    Hopespace Counseling.
  • Education & Youth: Over €19,000 directed toward DEIS schools support,
third-level access support, and special school support.
  • Food Security: Almost €50,000 in food vouchers purchased and distributed to families and individuals in need.
  • Refugee & Homeless Aid: €5,195 invested in dignity and support for displaced and unhoused individuals.
  • Senior & Carer Respite: €11,928 provided for breaks and weekends of rest.
  • Suicide Awareness & Visitations: Meaningful investments in mental health and personal outreach.

Each initiative is powered by the club’s volunteers—ordinary citizens doing extraordinary work. Whether organizing events, delivering vouchers, or visiting isolated individuals, Galway Lions Club members embody empathy, purpose, and action.

Looking Ahead

Membership growth this year has infused the club with fresh energy and ideas. New members bring new perspectives, strengthening the club’s foundation and expandingits reach. As Muireann Ryan notes, “This year’s efforts reflect more than just financial success—they show the heart of our community in action.”

Muireann Ryan, who now serves as Immediate Past President, continues her leadership journey as an officer of the Galway Lions Club. She has also taken on a wider role as Zone Chair for Lions Clubs Ireland, West and Midlands, where she will support and guide clubs across the region in their shared mission of service.

The Galway Lions Club remains committed to its mission: to serve with empathy, to connect with purpose, and to uplift those who need it most. In every euro raised and every hour volunteered, the club’s impact is felt—and its legacy continues to grow.

“A heartfelt thank-you to the Galway community, whose ongoing support makes this work possible. Whether through donations, event participation, or spreading the word, your belief in our mission fuels everything we do.”

Thank you,

Muireann Ryan
