GALWAY LIONS CLUB
Dúchas na Gaillimhe – Galway CIVIC TRUST
In October 2017 the innovation committee of Galway Lions Club initiated a project, with the goal of identifying and highlighting sites of historical, architectural and cultural importance throughout the city. Under the Chairmanship of Noel Meehan a committee (including members of Galway Lions Club, Dúchas Na Gaillimhe, Department of History NUIG and local historians) brought the project to a most satisfactory conclusion with the involvement of important stakeholders such as Dúchas Na Gailllimhe -Galway Civic Trust, The Galway Archeological and Historical Society, The Old Galway Society, The Department of History at National University of Ireland – Galway and other interested parties including local historians Peadar O’Dowd and William Henry. Twenty sites were chosen to be marked with a plaque*, funded by Galway Lions Club. The permission of the site owners, Planning, Engineering and Heritage Departments of Galway City Council and where necessary the National Monument Service was sought and obtained.
Details and location of the sites which form the Galway Heritage Trail can be seen on the link below.
*The plaques are of a modern and durable legible design following international best practice and are manufactured in Cast Aluminium with raised text and border finished in Polyester Powder coloured Navy Blue measuring approx. 490mm in diameter.
